Brett Oland is the CEO of Bow Valley Credit Union (BVCU), holding a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary. He previously served as a Board Member at Alberta Central's holdings. He is also a chartered accountant with expertise in corporate finance.
Brett led BVCU to launch Canada's first Bitcoin Gateway, partnering with Balance and Bull Bitcoin to allow members to buy Bitcoin directly from their credit union account, with holdings that are real, insured, and never leveraged.
Oland drew criticism after BVCU sponsored a Tucker Carlson event in Calgary, which he defended at the 2024 AGM as a direct marketing tool aimed at a new target demographic — people who "want more control over their lives" and have felt excluded by mainstream banks. He also faced controversy over alleged involvement with Take Back Alberta, a conservative political movement, which led the Airdrie-Cochrane NDP to move their accounts out of BVCU. Regulators have also accused him of posing a threat to the national banking system over BVCU's precious metals holdings, though Oland frames his clashes with regulators as part of BVCU's appeal to prospective members.
